We are delighted to announce that the Stonyhurst Sports Centre will be re-opening for group swimming lessons from Monday 7th September!

Swimming is a vital life skill which everyone should learn, whatever their age. Whether you have never been swimming before, or your goal is to improve technique, Stonyhurst Sports Centre offers swimming lessons for all abilities.

Covid Safe Children’s Swimming Lessons

In the strange times we find ourselves in, many parents are naturally concerned about the idea of starting or returning to swimming lessons. Here at the Stonyhurst Sports Centre, we have been working tirelessly to adapt to the new guidelines and ensure our swimmers are as safe as possible.

Swimming with us, you can be positive that our safe, hygienic and well-maintained pool will be ready to welcome you!

What’s changed? Frequently Asked Questions.

When you visit the Stonyhurst Sports Centre for swimming lessons, you can expect to see:

  • New operating procedures
  • Enhance cleaning regimes
  • Position of hand sanitisation stands throughout the facility
  • Visible social distancing markers
  • Small changes to entry and exit points where applicable
  • Access to changing rooms limited to ‘post-wet’ activity
  • Showers will not be in use
  • Limited use of swimming equipment
  • All equipment will be sanitised before and after each lesson

From September, and until government guidance eases, we will be asking that swimmers arrive ‘swim ready’ for lessons. In order to comply with social distancing restrictions, we also ask that only one parent or guardian from each family comes to view lessons, and that siblings only come if absolutely necessary.

Parents and swimmers will be allocated a zone on the balcony to ‘disrobe’, where each parent can remain throughout the lesson to spectate.

Group lesson times have been staggered to minimise footfall and only two classes will overlap in the pool at any one time. At the end of the lesson, the swimmers will access the changing rooms from poolside to get dressed. Parents will be asked to meet the swimmers in the changing room from the entrances in Reception. Spaces in the changing rooms will be allocated to allow for social distancing.

To ensure the safety of all swimmers and minimise areas of contact, the showers, hairdryers and mirrors will remain out of use.

How are we minimising contact in the pools?

  • Capacity within each class has been limited and only two group lessons will take place in the pool at any one time, greatly reducing contact
  • All swimming teachers will coach from poolside
  • We ask that swimmers shower at home

What does ‘swim ready’ mean?

Wherever possible, we ask that swimmers arrive at the pool wearing their swimming attire underneath their clothes, preferably having showered beforehand at home.

What do I need to do next?

Swimming lessons were suspended when the UK went into lockdown in March. To book your child onto the next block of swimming lessons, please contact the Sports Centre by email: sportscentre@stonyhurst.ac.uk

Any outstanding lessons will be credited to the new block.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to book a new block of lessons, please contact us via email and we can arrange to send you a refund.
